Big Five

Educational Value

Some of the African decorations were traditional symbols that served as a tool for transfer of knowledge from one generation to the other. The families would always gather by the fireplace after dinner where the elders would tell stories that captured the imagination of the young curious minds.

Symbol

  • Elephant
The elephant is known as Ndovu or Tembo in Swahili. These gentle giants inspire all with their remarkable traits, from their impeccable memory, to their profound rituals of mourning their dead.

Ndovu is regarded as a symbol of strength due to it’s maternal naturing traits and the ability to deter threats while co-existing with ferocious predators.

  • Buffalo
The Buffalo is called Nyati in Swahili. In the depiction of the great Masai Mara migration, little is said about this mysterious unfazed cow cousin that resides amidst mighty predators.

Nyati is a symbol of persistence. With zeal, the patiently executed defense tactics are Nyati’s strongest weapon of survival in the wild.

  • Rhino
The Rhino is known as Kifaru in Swahili. Kifaru is always overlooked but it possesses arguably the most admirable traits in the Animal Kingdom.

Kifaru is a symbol of confidence. The force of a charging undeterred Rhino signifies fortitude and resilience.

  • Lion
The Lion is known as Simba in Swahili. Labelled as the King of the jungle, the lion is a symbol of power, leadership and protection. When faced with a challenge, the lion charges on ferociously and with resolute bravery. These qualities are pivotal to the making of a leader and a warrior.

During some African rites of passage, young men acquired the title of Simba due to their courage and tact.

  • Leopard
The Leopard is called Chui in Swahili. Chui mirrors the Leadership traits shared by all cat families. However, the Chui gains a slight edge due its calculative tact and agility that spontaneously catches the prey unaware.
